Bulletin Board: Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League sign-ups begin

The West County Baseball Association is organizing teams to participate in the Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League (PVYBL).

An official sign-up day will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Mohawk Trail Regional High School in Buckland.

The WCBA’s plan is to have teams in the Sandy Koufax (14U) and Mickey Mantle (16U) leagues. League age is determined by a child’s age on Jan. 1, 2017. The 18-game season runs from the last week of May to the third week of July.

Babe Ruth Registrations 

Registration for the Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League continues tonight at Greenfield Middle School.

Players ages 12 to 15 (as of April 30) can register at one of the following dates from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

• Monday: Frontier Regional School.

• Thursday: Turners Falls Fire Department.

• March 27: Pioneer Valley Regional School.

• March 29: Greenfield Middle School.

• March 31: Frontier Regional School.

Registration fee is $175 for the season. After raffle ticket sales, $75 will be reimbursed.

Youth softball 

GGSL Registrations 

Registration for the Greenfield Girls’ Softball League will take place Saturday at the Greenfield Elks Lodge on 2 Church St.

Registration will be open from 9 to 11 a.m., and the league is open to all girls in Franklin County ages 5 to 16.

Montague Parks & Rec  

The Montague Parks & Recreation Department is taking registrations for several upcoming programs.

• Tee-ball is being offered for children ages 4 to 6 from April 22 through June 3. The child must be at least 4 years of age before the start date of the program. Proof of age will be required at the time of registration. The program will run Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Early Bird registration runs through March 25, and rates are $35 for Montague residents, $40 for non-residents. Regular fee after March 25 will be $40 for Montague residents, $45 for non-residents.

• Rookie League baseball for children ages 7 to 9 will run from April 22 through June 3 at Unity Park. Practices/scrimmages are slated for Saturday mornings from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The fee for residents is $40 and $45 for non-residents. MPRD recommends kindergarten players start with tee-ball before playing rookie ball. This is a coach-pitch program. The deadline for registration is April 1 or until the roster is full.

• Nipper League softball for girls ages 7 to 9 will run from early April through mid-June. Practices will take place on weekdays with times to be determined. League games will vary between weeknights and weekends. Games will be played at either Unity Park, Highland Park or Murphy Park in Greenfield.

The fee for Montague residents is $50, non-residents $55. MPRD recommends that kindergarten players start with tee-ball before playing Nipper League. This is a coach-pitch league. Registration deadline is March 30 or until the roster is full.

• Senior League softball for girls ages 10 to 12 will run from early April until mid-June, with all games taking place at Murphy Park in Greenfield. Practices will be held weekdays at a time to be determined. Games vary between weeknights and weekends. The fee for Montague residents is $70, non-residents $75. Registration runs through March 30 or until the roster is full.

Road racing 

Race to end child abuse set 

The Race to End Child Abuse 5K run/walk will take place on April 1 at The Children’s Advocacy Center at 56 Wisdom Way in Greenfield.

Registration for the event is at 8 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m. There is no registration fee for the race, but donations for the Children’s Advocacy Center will be accepted.

Soccer 

Prospective refs course 

The local scholastic soccer officials association will conduct an instructional course for new referees during April and May. Members of the Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association referee scholastic games of all levels in Hampshire and Franklin counties and in Athol during fall.

Members must be 18 years of age or older and pass a national background check. The instructional course includes five classes on weekday evenings, a rules test, and field training. The cost of the course is $50. Contact Artie Burke at 863-2452 or AEBurke11@verizon.net for more information.

Eaglebrook School Camps 

Eaglebrook School in Deerfield will hold its co-ed, family-oriented Eaglebrook Soccer Camp July 31 through Aug. 4 for children ages 6 to 16. For more information, contact Alex Edwards at aedwards@eaglebrook.org.

The school will also host a tennis camp June 26 to 30 for children ages 6 to 16. Half-day and full-day options are available.

Miscellaneous

Elms Sport Camp 

Elms College Athletics will host a sport camp this summer for children entering grades 1 through 8.

The camp runs daily from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. from July 31 through Aug. 4 on the campus at Elms College. The mission is to provide positive, quality instruction to all skill levels in a variety of sports.

College coaches and athletes will provide instruction to the following sports: Soccer (Monday), basketball (Tuesday), track and field (Wednesday), field hockey and lacrosse (Thursday), and volleyball and competitions (Friday).

Cost for a full week is $250 per camper. Anyone needing to extend the day by an hour (either for an 8 a.m. drop off or a 4 p.m. pickup) can do so for an additional $30. Campers should bring a bag lunch. Refrigeration, water, ice and a snack will be provided. Each camper must be covered by a family insurance, have a physical examination within a year and have proof of immunizations.
