GREENFIELD — The Friends of the Greenfield Public Library will partner with area breweries over the next few months in an effort to raise money for library programming.

As part of the fundraising series, breweries will donate a portion of their funds to the Friends on their respective night, explained Friends of the Greenfield Public Library member Sara Lark, who came up with the idea for the event series. The first fundraising night will take place at Element Brewing Co. at 16 Bridge St. in Millers Falls on Thursday, Jan. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m.

“I thought that would be a great way to work with our great local establishments,” Lark explained. “It’s also a way for our library supporters to come out and do something really different.”

Next month, Four Phantoms Brewing Co. at 301 Wells St. in Greenfield will host its regular trivia night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, with half of all trivia proceeds going to the Friends. Entry will be $10 per person, and a portion of beer sales between 4 and 9 p.m. will also go toward the Friends.

On Thursday, March 23, Brick & Feather Brewery at 78 11th St. in Turners Falls will host a fundraising night from 4:30 to 8 p.m., during which a “special beer” will be available. For each pint sold, $1 will be donated to the Friends.

“We want to really focus on the Franklin County community, honoring the businesses we have nearby and showing our support for those businesses by having them host us,” Lark said.

Acknowledging that some of the breweries so far — she hopes to add more in the coming months — are not in Greenfield, Lark said it was a reflection of the fact the Greenfield Public Library is a resource to people from across the county.

Lark said the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library helps support the various programming that takes place throughout the year, such as the summer reading program, the museum pass program and the poetry contest.

“It’s a pilot program, and if it works really well, maybe we’ll do it again,” she said of the partnership with breweries. “We’d love to see a lot of people come out so we can really thank the businesses that are donating to us, and show how much of a community we are and that we appreciate their show of support.”
