ORANGE — An Athol man pleaded not guilty Friday to 11 charges in connection to several alleged incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault in 2021 and 2022.

Christopher C. Mundell, 36, of Sanders Street, was arraigned in Orange District Court on seven counts of assault and battery on a family member and single counts of kidnapping, strangulation, indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, and attempt to commit rape, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

Athol Police arrested Mundell on Wednesday and he was held on $50,000 cash bail until Friday’s arraignment, when Judge Laurie MacLeod set bail at $1,000 with conditions that Mundell wear a GPS monitor and have no contact with the alleged victim. Assistant District Attorney Andrew Covington, who is prosecuting this case, had argued at a dangerousness hearing that Mundell be held without bail.

Mundell is represented by defense attorney Daniel Solomon.

Mundell served time in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to raping a 2½-year-old girl left in his care in May 2009 before using a steak knife to slash her thigh and then lighting her blanket on fire. He is a registered sex offender.

He is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on May 5.
