Artists/Designers

The Hosmer Gallery within Forbes Library is accepting applications to exhibit at the gallery during 2019. Western Massachusetts artists are invited to apply by June 15.

Exploded View, a dynamic group of women artists and writers working together to create original performance and exhibitions, is curating a community art show called “PaperJam: A Month-Long Riff on Paper,” to premier at the Great Falls Discovery Center in Turners Falls during the month of September.

Artists living in western Massachusetts are invited to submit artwork on, about or related to paper, its personal or local significance or their creative interpretation thereof.

To participate, email up to three JPEG images, with a brief description of each, including the title, dimensions and materials, along with your name, address and phone number, to explodedviewma@gmail.com by Aug. 22. The drop-off date for accepted work will be Sept. 1, with a reception on Sunday, Sept 9. Participants who are able to donate $5 to help with reception costs may do so at drop-off time, but there are no submission fees.

Forbes Library is seeking a 125th anniversary logo to be used on flyers, bookmarks, digitally and on printed goods.

Submit proposals to Forbes Library Director Lisa Downing at ldowning@forbeslibrary.org by July 1, including a sketch of your concept and your fee. The budget range for the project is $250 to $500.

Final designs should be submitted in SVG format. If the design includes color, then a monochromatic version should be submitted as well. The tagline “Forbes Library: Working for the Common Good” will tie together all anniversary activities.

Poetry

The Poetry Chapbook Contest for the Elyse Wolf Prize is accepting submissions. Winner receives publication, $500 and becomes an active member of the press. Deadline June 15. Films

The Ashfield FilmFest is accepting short films for its September competition. This year, the event is branching out to include residents of Shelburne and Buckland.

Residents of Shelburne, Buckland or Ashfield can submit a film five minutes or less about any topic. Nonresidents can submit a five-minute film, but must reference Ashfield somehow in the film (such as being set in Ashfield or including an Ashfield resident).

Submissions are due Aug. 3. All films must conform to a PG rating and be suitable to general audiences. Music must be original, public domain or used with written permission from the copyright holder. Full written permissions, including the participants, copyrighted materials and music, must be submitted with the entry. Entrants retain all copyrights for their materials.

Submit full resolution HD copies of your movie as a .mov or .m4v data file on either a USB drive or on a data DVD. Submissions are non-returnable.

Vendors

The Bernardston Kiwanis Club is seeking artists, craftspeople and specialty food purveyors for its two-day Scarecrow in the Park event on Oct. 20 and 21.

The booth fee for the two-day weekend is $45 per 10-by-10-foot space and $70 for a 10-by-20-foot space. It is expected that artists will commit to the whole weekend, however, a limited number of single-day applications will be accepted at the full weekend price.

Participants

The third annual Friends of the Greenfield Public Library Spelling Bee is happening on June 14, at 6:30 p.m., at the Second Congregational Church. Start forming your teams of three now.

The Hilltown Youth Theatre Summer Workshop is looking for young risk takers and collaborators for this season’s outdoor, traveling summer spectacle, “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” The workshop is an intensive arts experience for aspiring actors, artists, musicians, singers, dancers and set designers ages 10 to 18. Performers exchange voices with guest artists from Ashfield’s Double Edge Theatre to Knighthorse Theatre Company and other luminaries of the Pioneer Valley’s performing arts community.

The workshop incorporates movement, puppets, mask-making, voice training and work on large apparatus (such as stilts, aerial fabrics, spools and flying trapeze). The 2018 workshop will take place from July 16 to Aug. 8 at the Hawlemont Regional School in Charlemont (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with select evening and weekend rehearsals). The program concludes with four evening performances (Aug. 4 through 7) at Berkshire East Mountain Resort.

A two-week, half-day recovery intensive for youth overcoming addiction, trauma, anxiety, depression and other behavioral health challenges is also offered from July 2 to July 13 (Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
