GREENFIELD — For the Alimonos family of Hadley, making pizza is a tradition that spans five decades and two continents.

“My family has been in the business since 1970, back home in Greece,” said Costas Alimonos, who recently opened Georgio’s Pizza at 25 Main St., where Athens Pizza was located until it closed last year after more than 30 years in business. “We expanded over here in the states back in ’86.”

Alimonos said he was born in Chicago before his family returned to Athens, Greece, where he grew up. In 1986, he came back to the United States, eventually settling in western Massachusetts.

“We were looking for a place to do business, and ended up purchasing Athens Pizza” with its former owner, he recalled. “I’ve always liked this location.”

Alimonos later left Athens Pizza to pursue other business opportunities, he said. He previously owned Athena’s Pizza in Amherst and currently owns Sofia’s Pizza on Federal Street in Greenfield. Each venture, he said, has been named after one of his four children: Athina, 22, Sofia, 21, Georgio, 19, and Starla, 17.

“I’m proud of my kids,” he said. “One way to show it is to name a business after them.”

The new restaurant on Main Street will offer a more limited menu than Sofia’s Pizza on Federal Street, which caters more to takeout and delivery, and offers a selection of wings, burgers and wraps, in addition to pizza and pasta. The menu at Georgio’s, meanwhile, offers a selection of pizza, pasta, salads and grinders, and has several booths for in-person dining.

Alimonos said he spent the last four months remodeling the interior of the restaurant, replacing the carpets, lighting, countertops and decor. The kitchen and bathrooms were also renovated.
